In these brief stories, Traster uses keen detail, humor and pathos to tell how she has embraced and navigated life in a rural suburb north of Manhattan. In these stories we meet nutty neighbors, bumbling town officials, new friends, a plethora of domestic and wild animals, and of course, her family.

Buy it now on Kindle.Pot Luck Tea Companyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14166199859508273143noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4242657024190819137.post-6748665692198569152010-07-21T07:07:00.000-07:002010-07-21T07:14:37.068-07:00Deeper Discount on Remaining Yixing Stock
We still have a few Yixing teapots left, and have deepened the discounts. It's true. But we love cooking as much as we love tea. Now we've added some culinary salts to our offerings. All salts are sold by the pound with a one pound minimum.

These are really lovely products for serious cooks out there.

To see our offerings of culinary salt, click here: http://potlucktea.com/Salt.htmPot Luck Tea Companyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14166199859508273143noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4242657024190819137.post-33330753122747355412010-07-14T06:53:00.000-07:002010-07-14T07:01:32.002-07:00Jasmine Scented Ice Cream Recipe
Jasmine Scented Ice Cream:

3 cups milk, reduced with dried jasmine flowers to 2 cups yield

1/4 cup dried jasmine flowers

1/2 pound sugar

1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise, scraped and chopped

3/4 cup egg yolks (the fresher the eggs, the better)

2 cups organic heavy cream (avoid ultra-pasteurized)

In a non-reactive saucepan, simmer milk with jasmine flowers and reduce by 1/3 to 2 cups volume. It was rated SFTGFOP-1 (Super Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, Grade 1). I am often skeptical of ratings but tea buyers use them as a threshold to importing better teas. Taste is always the final arbiter. So when I received the tea and had my first cup, I was impressed, then delighted. It is a full bodied, beautiful tea that stands up well to the addition of milk and is fantastic as a morning tea, or a tea for that later-in-the-day pick-me-up. I only have a limited quantity to start, but have already ordered more of this Single Estate Assam. Find it here: http://potlucktea.com/Portfolio.htm (third tea from the top).

And remember, use coupon code "sophie" to receive 10% off any order over $25.00/Pot Luck Tea Companyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14166199859508273143noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4242657024190819137.post-69673009399440943782010-01-29T07:55:00.001-08:002010-01-29T08:00:57.012-08:00"Buy The Pound"We've made some changes here at Pot Luck Tea Company. Most of our customers buy tea by-the-pound. For years we had kept a double inventory of four ounce bags and larger one pound bags. We've eliminated the smaller packages to keep our costs down and hold the pound prices where they have historically been. So, while most tea companies raised prices by 5-11% last year, we've held prices at 2005 levels. We should also have an easier time with inventory management, and ship our orders more quickly.

We've sold out of our Iwachu cast-iron tetsubin tea kettles and will not be re-stocking them.

Finally, we continue deep discounts on our Yixing teaware. We still have a fair amount of inventory though some items have dwindled down to just a few pieces remaining.

As a "thank-you" please use coupon code "sophie" for 10% off any order over $25.00.Pot Luck Tea Companyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14166199859508273143noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4242657024190819137.post-4188612153857274132009-03-09T06:44:00.000-07:002009-03-09T06:55:52.886-07:00"Tasting: Tea, The Essential Pause" in Tricycle MagazinePhyllis Segura, a friend of Pot Luck Tea alerted us to her latest article on Tricycle Magazine's web site. Accurately described as a TGFOP (Tippy, Golden, Flowery, Orange, Pekoe), this tea is produced on the Sonarie Tea Estate, located in the Sibsagar district. According to local lore, JONAK (the tea's name) means "Assam's Moonlight." The tea garden's history can be traced back to 1874. The tea has a medium-large leaf with some golden tips, and it has a pleasant malty spiciness, very round in taste.

Pot Luck Tea is moving forward with our goal to switch over to all organic teas, with either USDA or EU Certifed Organic.

I truly enjoyed this tea and will definitely order it for our spring tea additions. These teapots have been created in the Chinese province of Yixing (pronounced yee-shing) since the Sung Dynasty (960-1279). These works of art are both collectible and utilitarian.
For centuries, Yixing potters have fashioned teapots from the purple-brown clay of the region. The beautiful stoneware vessels became the models for the earliest European teapots in the late 17th century. Yixing pots were made in China until the communist revolution brought production to a halt. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Yixing potters resumed this ancient craft. Today Yixing pots are collected and treasured throughout the world.

Because they are not glazed, the clay pots absorb the tea. Over time, a layer of tea sediment forms and with subsequent use the pots retain the flavor, color and aroma of the tea. This is why it is best to use one kind of tea in your Yixing pot.

We are offering deep discounts on some of our most popular Yixing teapots and tea mugs.

Here are some examples:

Catwalk Yixing Teapot, was $35.00, now $26.56

Top Dog Yixing Teapot, was $19.00, now $14.25

Yixing Catwalk Mug, was $13.50, now $11.50

Covered Yixing Mug (pictured above), was $15.00, now $11.25

Butterfly Glazed Teapot, was $28.00, now $21.00

Cicada Bamboo Teapot, was $32.00, now $24.00

Simplicity Yixing Tea Set, was $38.00, now $28.50

White Glaze Yixing Tea Set, was $35.00, now $26.25

These prices are only valid while supplies last. This oolong is entirely handmade Ti Kuan Yin from the Chinese Fujian Province and has an unusually pronounced natural sweetness. It has a lighter cup color and a more complex, sweet, orchid-like aroma with a rich flavor that persists effortlessly for three infusions.

Recommendations: Use 1 heaping tsp. per 6 oz. cup; heat fresh cold water until steaming briskly (195ºF); let steep for 2 1/2 minutes. The leaves support many consecutive infusions.

The tea is priced at $20.00 for four ounces, or $68.00 per pound. But for a slightly inconsistent leaf appearance the tea would be priced higher. If you were going to splurge on one oolong this year, this would be it. And as alway, use current coupon codes for discounts.
Pot Luck Tea Companyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14166199859508273143noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4242657024190819137.post-71760088883263718352009-01-23T07:11:00.000-08:002009-01-23T07:17:13.351-08:00Check out "The Teashop Girls" by Laura Schaefer Here's what the book is about:

"Being in middle school can be pretty rough.
